Cassandra Peterson is responding to Meghan Markle’s comments on her iconic character Elvira from the 1988 cult film Elvira: Mistress of the Dark. Elvira’s dark hair became the subject of a light-hearted joke that Markle shared earlier during a podcast.
Peterson, known for her wit and comic timing, took to Instagram to promptly respond to Markle’s reference to her character’s hair. She posted a screenshot of an article describing Meghan Markle’s reference to Elvira and added a witty caption, which read:
“Hey princess, if you ever need beauty advice from a queen just let me know”
Earlier, during an episode of Markle’s podcast Confessions of a Female Founder with Meghan, Markle spoke about a hair mishap during the pandemic. As per People magazine, she said:
“So my family had just moved to California. We were staying in our friend's home. And because it was the pandemic, I kept ordering boxed hair dye. And I thought, ‘I'm gonna look just like she does on the box…Instead, it was this very inky, almost Elvira-esque black hair.”
In her social media post, Peterson was likely referencing the fact that Markle is linked to the British royal family through her marriage to Prince Harry. Simultaneously, she was also highlighting the iconic status her portrayal of Elvira has attained ever since the character’s cinematic debut in 1988.
Based on fan reactions on social media, it seems everyone enjoyed the light-hearted banter between Meghan Markle and Cassandra Peterson, centered around the legendary character of Elvira.
Cassandra Peterson’s portrayal of Elvira, explored
Cassandra Peterson, in an interview with Huffington Post, revealed how a chance audition for television marked the beginning of the Elvira character. She recalled:
“I considered myself a comedy actress, but I wasn’t working. I was working as a hostess at a restaurant and going on auditions. I did bit parts on TV shows like ‘Fantasy Island’ and ‘Happy Days,’ and a friend of mine told me about an audition for a horror host on a local TV station. It didn’t pay anything because it was local TV, but I thought, I love horror. That’d be awesome.”
Cassandra Peterson recalled that, contrary to her expectations, the director seemed interested in her acting during the audition. However, she shared with Huffington Post that the director wanted her to come up with a costume idea that would appear spooky.

This task, according to Peterson, marked the beginning of a process that allowed her to explore various dimensions of horror. According to her, Elvira’s look was developed with help from her friend Robert Redding, who drew inspiration from the makeup styles of the Japanese theatrical form Kabuki.
In an excerpt from her memoir Yours Cruelly, Elvira, shared on Literary Hub, Cassandra Peterson revealed the inspiration behind Elvira’s hairstyle. The Japanese-inspired makeup was combined with a hairstyle based on musician Ronnie Spector, who performed with the ’60s group The Ronettes. Peterson described Spector as “the original bad girl of rock and roll.”
According to Forbes, Elvira, which began as a horror hostess TV character, eventually became deeply associated with Halloween culture—further cementing Peterson’s lasting fame.
