Saoirse Ronan lost the role of playing Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter after an audition she gave when she was 9.

During a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live to promote her new film The Outrun, Saoirse Ronan looked back on the roles she has lost out on. While mentioning that she gave an audition to play Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter series and lost the role, the Irish actress said,

"There's things that you'll pass on and then they come out, and you think, 'Oh God, that was a misstep on my part, but I think the one that stayed with me over the years - I didn't say no to it, I just didn't get the part. I lost, again. It's a running theme for me."

The actress best known for her roles in The Little Woman and Ladybird looked back at when the film series first started looking for an Irish girl to play Luna Lovegood, a character in the Harry Potter franchise who eventually joined Dumbledore's Army. Fans found Luna to be a comforting presence while being a little quirky and odd. Evanna Lynch went on to play Luna.

"I had gone up for Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter years ago, 'cause it was like the Irish character, so they got everyone Irish - in like half of Ireland to come and audition - and I knew I wasn't going to get it' cause I was too young, but I got to read out a scene that was gonna be in Harry Potter and it was the coolest thing ever."

What other roles has Saoirse Ronan lost?

Except for losing out to play Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter series, Saoirse Ronan discussed a few other opportunities she missed. Saoirse could not play Weird Barbie in Greta Gerwig's Barbie due to scheduling issues with The Outrun.

Conversely, the actress was considered for roles in other major films, such as The Scarlet Witch in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Ronan also mentioned that she auditioned for a role in Star Wars Episode VIII: The Force Awakens but unfortunately lost the opportunity to Daisey Ridley.

She went on to turn down the role of an elf in The Hobbit since the long shooting schedule in New Zealand would have prevented the actress from taking on other opportunities.
