Did Joe Jonas really break up with AJ Michalka over the phone? 'Potential Breakup Song' singer sets the record straight

AJ Michalka is rewriting the narrative around her teenage breakup with Joe Jonas, revealing that their split was far more amicable than fans may have assumed.

Speaking on the Podcrushed podcast on Jan. 8, 2026, the 34-year-old singer-actress was asked about her infamous breakup with the Jonas Brothers star, which allegedly lasted for only 30 seconds, to which she clarified:

"We didn't break up over text; it was over a phone call. No, that's not how this went down. I feel like it was a very sweet, amicable [breakup]. I know that sounds crazy at that age. But it was sweet, and I think it was mutual."

AJ Michalka also revealed on the latest podcast episode how she and Joe Jonas first hit it off.

"We had also toured together, so we got to know each other on the road. That's how it started."

It will be recalled that the Jonas Brothers opened for Aly & AJ on tour in 2006, where their teenage romance reportedly kicked off. AJ Michalka and Joe Jonas dated then, with the former revealing that the Cake By the Ocean hitmaker was her first kiss. They called it quits later that year.

Michalka, who is one-half of the pop-rock duo Aly & AJ, remained friends with the Jonas Brother post-split, and even reunited onstage in May 2025 at Joe's intimate solo concert at The Mint in Los Angeles.

AJ Michalka on connection with ex Joe Jonas: "There is a friendship there that will always be there"

This is not the first time AJ Michalka has opened up about her friendship with Joe Jonas. During Aly & AJ's September 2024 interview with People, the singer revealed:

"Even though, obviously, him and I were together, I think that there is a friendship there that will always be there. We were together when our music careers were just taking off, so there's a nuance that most people don't understand. That's kind of cool."

AJ Michalka continued:

"He's a dad now. He works really hard, and he still has a really good sense of humor. And he is really kind. It was very refreshing to see that."

During the conversation with the outlet, the songstress also addressed the long-running rumor that the duo's hit breakup track Potential Breakup Song isn't about AJ's split with the Jonas Brothers band member. It was actually the song Flattery, a track off their third studio album Insomniatic, that drew inspiration from the Camp Rock star.

When asked if Aly & AJ members are interested in collaborating with the Jonas Brothers onstage, they answered:

"There's definitely a possibility. It's just a matter of if the stars align and we're able to make it happen with both of us being out on the road. It's tricky, but, yeah, ideally, that would be awesome."

Meanwhile, AJ Michalka has been dating actor Joshua Charles Pence since 2017.

Joe Jonas, on the other hand, has been reported to be dating model Tatiana Gabriela since January 2026. He shares two children with his ex-wife, Sophie Turner.
