Chris Hemsworth has played all kinds of roles in his long career. These include Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, F1 driver James Hunt in Rush, and George Kirk in Star Trek. Apart from a voice role in Star Trek Into Darkness, the actor did not make a comeback to the soap opera franchise and even passed on Star Trek 4.
He was set to reprise the role of Kirk and reunite with Chris Pine in the fourth installment, but it did not happen. Hemsworth has revealed the reason for him to give the film a pass.
Let us find out what exactly he said.
Here's why Chris Hemsworth did not do Star Trek 4
Chris Hemsworth walked away from Star Trek 4 because the salary negotiations fell apart. While his character, George Kirk, had died in the first film, the makers had come up with an idea to reprise him in the fourth film. But the actor revealed that he had concerns about the script and the way his character would return. Speaking to Josh Horowitz, he said:
"It wasn’t what I sort of where I was thinking it would have been or could have been. I thought there would be, ‘Okay, cool, let’s figure that out and keep going.’ And then I think everyone got busy and so on…It would be weird now to flash back to your father and ‘why is he so much older than the first time when he died?’."
There were reports that Hemsworth and Chris Pine were planning to return as a father-son duo. But, according to an exclusive by THR, after the disappointing box office performance of Star Trek Beyond, both actors were asked to take a pay cut.
However, in a Variety interview, Hemsworth said that he walked away because of his concern over the script.
"I didn’t feel like we landed on a reason to revisit that yet. I didn’t want to be underwhelmed by what I was going to bring to the table."
The first Star Trek was a reboot and the 11th film in the franchise. It was directed by J.J. Abrams and was released in 2009 to strong box office results, minting $385.7 million. It was followed by two sequels, Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond, that came out in 2013 and 2016, respectively.
It would have been interesting to see how the father-son storyline involving Chris Hemsworth would have panned out in Star Trek 4.
