Sandra Oh of Grey's Anatomy and Killing Eve fame finally took home her first Emmy After 14 nominations over the years, she finally got her due at this year's Creative Arts Emmys. The actress won for producing the Hulu film, Quiz Lady.
Oh, who for years has been up for an Emmy for her incredible work in Killing Eve, Saturday Night Live, and Grey's Anatomy, among others, was not in attendance as she was in Canada. Her Quiz Lady co-stars Awkwafina, and writer/producer Jen D'Angelo were shocked when informed that Oh finally won an Emmy after all this time.
"We were all so proud of her," D'Angelo shared backstage.
Even with all the hurdles from the pandemic and strikes during filming, Quiz Lady came out on top, giving Sandra Oh a solid spot in TV history.
Sandra Oh’s long road to Emmy victory
Since creating waves as Cristina Yang in Grey's Anatomy between 2005 and 2014, Sanda Oh gathered many Emmy nods. These cut across many categories like Outstanding Lead Actress for her role in Killing Eve as Eve Polastri and Outstanding Supporting Actress in Grey's Anatomy. She had been nominated for guest hosting Saturday Night Live in 2019 as well.
Jen D'Angelo touched upon the challenges of making the show:
"We shot during Covid, premiered during the strike... It’s been wonderful to share it with the world and have nights like tonight to celebrate it."
The importance of Quiz Lady and Sanda Oh’s Emmy win
Quiz Lady is a comedy that got its premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. It tells the story of two sisters, Jenny and Anne Yum, played by Sandra Oh and Awkwafina, respectively. They try to pull their mom out of gambling debt by getting her to develop a strange obsession with a game show.
It also has Will Ferrell and Holland Taylor and is one of those movies that balances laughs and feels well. Getting picked up by Hulu improved the film's visibility.
This is a personal win for Sanda Oh, but at the same time, it points to some of the changes finally happening in Hollywood's representation. For this Korean-Canadian actress, her success ties in with the ongoing talks of diversity in entertainment.
Her story has shown how sticking with it and having talent can eventually lead one to recognition, even after facing challenges. Her co-star Awkwafina was over the moon for Sanda Oh's win. While Oh couldn't make the event herself, fans could feel the team's excitement as they picked it up for her.
Awkwafina said backstage:
"She’s someone we’ve admired for years, and it feels right that she’s finally been honored."
Quiz Lady is currently streaming exclusively on Hulu.
