With Mickey 17, the highly awaited return of Bong Joon-ho, the Oscar-winning director of Parasite, is finally on the horizon. This time, he returns with a new sci-fi film up his sleeves set to release on January 31, 2025.
The upcoming film is based on Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7. Robert Pattinson will be seen in a leading role in this intense, futuristic story.
If you're excited about this new sci-fi adventure from Bong Joon-ho featuring Robert Pattinson, here's everything we know so far about Mickey 17, including its release date, plot, and cast.
Release date for Mickey 17
The movie was originally set to be released this year. However, due to production delays owing partly to the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, it will now be released next year. Warner Bros. has confirmed that the film will be released on January 31, 2025.
This new date will also allow the film to be opened in IMAX, which wasn’t possible any earlier due to scheduling conflicts. Moreover, the new date coincidentally aligns with Lunar New Year, a significant event for moviegoers.
Releasing in January also gives Mickey 17 an added advantage, as this period is comparatively quieter at the box office. The absence of major competition along with the long wait might help in increasing the demand for Bong Joon-ho's sci-fi thriller.
The plot of Mickey 17
Bong Joon-ho’s unique skills shine through in this high-concept dystopian sci-fi film. The story explores the life of the lead character, Mickey Barnes, who is on a human expedition as an "expendable" employee to colonize an ice planet. Every task performed by Mickey is dangerous and death lurks around every corner.
But every time he dies, he comes back to life as a new clone to carry out his tasks and duties. The number 17 in the title of the film suggests that he has died and come back to life 17 times.
However, every good story comes with a twist. This dystopian film turns the tables by halting the process of death and life as Mickey refuses to be replaced by the next clone, Mickey 18. This means both versions of himself must coexist.
So, the two Robert Pattinsons (two clones of Mickey) must navigate life on the ice planet. It is set to be a thrilling adventure as they come across strange native life forms that might cause complications, and threaten the entire colony.
The cast of Mickey 17
The cast of Mickey 17 is led by Robert Pattinson, who has proven his versatility with roles in films like Batman, The Lighthouse, and High Life.
