After Brady Corbet's The Brutalist, M. Night Shyamalan's Remain becomes the latest film to have been shot on VistaVision, according to DiscussingFilm.

In May 2025, Words of Reel reported that Shyamalan's film will be shot on this format, as per a confirmation by the film's DP Adolpho Veloso. At the time, the publication also mentioned a few other filmmakers who would be using this format, which is said to help obtain a richer image quality than a conventional format.

According to Words of Reel, Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another, Greta Gerwig's Narnia film, Yorgos Lanthimos's Bugonia, Alejandro González Iñárritu's untitled Tom Cruise-starrer film, and Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights have been shot with VistaVision. So, M. Night Shyamalan's Remain will be another addition to this list.

The director has often preferred to shoot his projects on film instead of digital format, except for the 2013 movie, After Earth. Even his most recent film, the 2024 crime thriller Trap, was shot on 35 mm film stock.

VistaVision is said to offer better image quality with less distortion compared to its 35 mm film camera alternative. It can also help capture a wider field of view without needing to use extremely wide-angle lenses. That's how it helped Lol Crowley with a rich visual language for The Brutalist, and Adolpho Veloso can achieve a similar result with his work on Remain.

What else do we know about M. Night Shyamalan's Remain?

Remain is a supernatural romantic thriller directed by M. Night Shyamalan with a narrative he co-wrote with The Notebook author Nicholas Sparks. According to a Deadline report, the film will be headlined by Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler, Brokeback Mountain) and Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton, Fair Play).

The rest of the Remain's cast will include,

  • Ashley Walters (Adolescence)
  • Jay O. Sanders (His Three Daughters)
  • Tracy Ifeachor (The Pitt)
  • Julie Hagerty (Marriage Story)
  • Hannah James (The Gray House)
  • Kieran Mulcare (Jessica Jones)
  • Maria Dizzia (My Old A*s)
  • Caleb Ruminer (The Irrational)

The film's plot synopsis, as per IMDb, reads:

"A grieving architect moves to Cape Cod for work after leaving a psychiatric facility. While staying at a historic B&B, he meets a mysterious woman who makes him question his rational beliefs about life and loss."

On June 19, 2025, Shyamlan posted a picture of himself with a clapperboard to reveal that he has started shooting the movie with Adolpho Veloso as his Director of Photography.

Apart from writing and directing, Shyamalan produced this project with Ashwin Rajan under his Blinding Edge Pictures banner. Marc Bienstock also co-produced it along with Spark's frequent collaborator, Theresa Park.

Warner Bros. Pictures has decided to release M. Night Shyamalan's Remain in theaters on October 23, 2026. So, according to the current schedule, it will clash with an upcoming untitled Jordan Peele film, with Universal Pictures, as per Deadline. Despite those concerns, both projects will be some of the most anticipated projects of 2026.

Remain marks The Sixth Sense director's follow-up to the 2024 psychological horror film, Trap, starring Josh Hartnett, which earned over $83 million worldwide.
