Michael Madsen's Body of Work
Michael Madsen earned fame in Reservoir Dogs and became an established player in Quentin Tarantino's films. The two had an incredible relationship with each other, and their relationship continued showing up again on the major screen on different occasions in the future, with Madsen starring in Kill Bill volume 2, The Hateful Eight, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
However, Michael Madsen wasn't just a quintessential Tarantino actor. His career stretched far beyond those collaborations, which showed his vast range as an actor. Apart from being a voice artist in video games, he also starred in projects like Free Willy and Die Another Day, among others. He worked as an artist for more than 4 decades, and he was awarded plenty of accolades to show for his efforts in the industry.
He shed light on his experiences in the industry in an interview with THR’s Scott Roxborough in 2018, in which he said:
"Fame is a two-edged sword. There are a lot of blessings but also a lot of heavy things that come with it. I think it has a lot to do with the characters I’ve played. I think I’ve been more believable than I should have been. I think people really fear me. They see me and go: ‘Holy sh*t, there’s that guy!"
He also shared details about his proclivities in the interview. He went on:
"But I’m not that guy. I’m just an actor. I’m a father, I’ve got seven children. I’m married, I’ve been married 20 years. When I’m not making a movie, I’m home, in pajamas, watching The Rifleman on TV, hopefully with my 12-year-old making me a cheeseburger. I sure as hell had my rabble-rousing days, but sooner or later you have to get over that and move on.”
Michael Madsen's death marks not just the loss of an actor but the end of a great Hollywood presence. The actor is survived by his six children.
The 67-year-old actor won numerous accolades, including the Lifetime Achievement Award at Red Hen Press (2006), Best Actor for Strength and Honour at the Boston Film Festival (2007), and Best Actor for Strength and Honour at the New York International Independent Film & Video Festival (2008). Madsen also won the 2015 Ensemble of the Year for The Hateful Eight and was also honored with the Firecracker Alternative Book Award for his book of poetry, Burning In Paradise.
