Kirsten Dunst recently said that she's interested in starring in A Minecraft Movie sequel. It may come as a surprise to those who've seen only her serious dramatic roles or know her from her more recent work, like A24's Civil War. Yet, before all of that, she was a Marvel star, even years before the MCU was conceived.
Dunst starred in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man film trilogy in the early 2000s, where she played Mary Jane Watson, the love interest of teenage Peter Parker. The three movies made a splash at the box office, turning Dunst and her co-star, Tobey Maguire, into overnight sensations. Even now, some Spidey fans see them as the definitive Peter and MJ.
Since then, Kirsten Dunst has worked in films from all genres, regardless of their budget, scale, or scope. Last year, she headlined Alex Garland's dystopian action thriller, which became A24's second-highest-grossing film. However, after that bleak war drama, she won't mind starring in the candy-flossed world of A Minecraft Movie sequel.
The Oscar-nominated actress spoke about it during her conversation with Town & Country Magazine. She mentioned that her two sons love the first movie, which makes her want to star in the sequel. Besides that, she revealed the second reason she is interested in starring in the sequel.
“Maybe I can just make a movie where I don’t lose money?” said Dunst.
A Minecraft Movie has been one of the major hits of 2025, and a sequel is already on its way

When Jack Black was announced as Steve in A Minecraft Movie, some fans were not on board with the casting choice. It all changed when the movie actually dropped in theaters.
The School of Rock star brought his unique energy to the world of this sandbox game and became one of the factors for its remarkable box office success. The Minecraft fans showed up at theaters for many reasons, including the viral "Chicken Jockey" trend, or the several community-specific easter eggs only they could figure out.
A Minecraft Movie's cast also included the Aquaman star Jason Momoa, the Peacemaker star Danielle Brooks, and the Wednesday star Emma Myers. Jennifer Coolidge left a strong impression after her scene-stealing turn in HBO's The White Lotus, while Rachel House and Matt Berry joined in crucial voice roles, besides the young star, Sebastian Eugene Hansen.
Jared Hess directed this Warner Bros. project with a reported $150 million budget, which proved to be a massively profitable fare. It has earned over $955 million at the global box office, with over $423 million from the North American theaters, making it the highest-grossing movie at the domestic market, as per Box Office Mojo.
Kirsten Dunst has exciting collaborations lined up for 2025, with Keanu Reeves and Channing Tatum

Kirsten Dunst, who shared her interest in starring in A Minecraft Movie sequel, will soon be seen alongside Channing Tatum in Derek Cianfrance's Roofman. The film is based on the real-life story of Jeffrey Manchester, a convicted spree robber. Tatum headlines the project alongside Dunst, starring as a divorced mom and his potential love interest.
Dunst will also star in The Entertainment System Is Down, written and directed by Ruben Östlund (Triangle of Sadness), alongside Keanu Reeves, Samantha Morton, Nicholas Braun, Daniel Brühl, and more.
