James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film marks the beginning of a bold new chapter for DC’s cinematic universe. Leaning off of it being a lighter tone than Zack Snyder's heavy themes, Gunn's dreams have a more modern cast. An overlooked hero will next appear on the big screen for the first time since its appearance in Green Lantern (2011). Gardner will be going mainstream.

Portrayed by The Rookie star Nathan Fillion, Gardner will appear alongside Mister Terrific and David Corenswet’s Superman as they unite to defend Earth. The first high-profile live-action portrayal of Guy Gardner, probably because of the character's iconic bowl cut, which has already started getting popular.

When it came to Gardner, Fillion took a different approach to his opinion of superhero costumes, overhauling them for today's audiences. Nathan Fillion opened up on the Max’s DC Studios Showcase Official Podcast about how the haircut decision was made behind the scenes. As he tells it, several hairstyle options were floated, but Fillion insisted on sticking with what fans know. He said:

"There was some talk about different hairstyles. There was some talk about some different types of things we were going to go... I was team bowl cut the whole way. It's canon. It's set. I said, 'If we don't do a bowl cut, we're going to hear about it."

Several haircuts were tossed around as he tells it, but Fillion knew what they oughta stick with.

He still plays LAPD officer John Nolan on The Rookie, which is where he went with a wig to recreate Gardner's famous haircut — a win-win for both the look of these characters.

Embracing the weird in Superman’s world

Gunn’s inclusion of Guy Gardner signals a commitment to embracing the quirkier, more varied aspects of the DC Universe. It’s a move that aligns with Gunn’s known affection for obscure but beloved comic characters. After all, Lex Luthor as played by Nicholas Hoult in Superman, it isn't going to be like the grounded storytelling super hero goofy comic bookness can live together. Describing how he feels about his character, Lex explained:

"He's someone who really worked hard for a long time in terms of science and himself and how he wants to be perceived and his intellect. Even, for me, physically in this, I wanted him to feel like he was as much alpha as possible, where he's someone who's, in his mind, done everything he possibly could for himself but also for humanity in some ways. In his mind, he should be adored. And then this person, this superhuman, this alien has come along who all those things come naturally to in many ways. That gives him a deep, deep resentment."

In Luthor's case, he will play a more psychologically twisted adversary — one that is motivated by Superman's natural inclinations and the resentment this prompts. Gardner, in all his wig hair glory, however, is the humour and fan-service that gets toned out on a more balanced and character-diverse DCU.
