“I disappeared into his eyes”: Eddington director Ari Aster reveals how mesmerised he was while first meeting star Austin Butler

Ari Aster, the director of the recently released film Eddington, wrote to Men's Health in an email about how he felt when he met actor Austin Butler for the first time. Butler, one of the cast members of the film, portrayed a cult leader, Vernon Jefferson Peak.

Recalling the experience felt by Aster when he met Austin Butler for the first time, the director pens down by stating:

"I disappeared into his eyes at multiple points in the conversation..."

Eddington director Ari Aster is all praises for Austin Butler

As reported by Men's Health, the director of Eddington, Ari Aster, penned an email writing about his experience meeting Austin Butler for the first time. In his statement, he reveals that something was striking in the way Butler's eyes would express it. It is that aspect that convinced the director about how apt he is for the role of Vernon Jefferson Peak in the film. Aster wrote:

“I disappeared into his eyes at multiple points in the conversation and reemerged with the conviction that he’d be a perfect cult leader. I was already a member.”

He also wrote about Austin Butler's joyful demeanor in the email, stating:

“He’s also easy to make laugh, which I’m a sucker for.”

Austin Butler began his career when he was a teenager. His career began with his acting stint on the kids' channel, Nickelodeon. His first feature film experience took place in the 2009 film, Aliens in the Attic. Soon, he began making a more impressionable mark in the industry, by starring in films and series, including Ruby & the Rockits (2009), The Carrie Diaries (2013-2014), The Shannara Chronicles (2016-2017), Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019), Elvis (2022), The Bikeriders (2023), Dune: Part Two (2024) and Masters of the Air (2024), to name a few.

In his career, Butler has been honored with a BAFTA as well as a Golden Globe for his portrayal of the iconic American musical sensation, Elvis Presley, in Elvis. His upcoming film is Darren Aronofsky's Caught Stealing, releasing on August 29, 2025.

Ari Aster is known for his work in The Strange Thing About the Johnsons (2011), Munchausen (2013), Hereditary (2018), Midsommar (2019), Beau Is Afraid (2023), etc.

Apart from Butler, Eddington stars Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O'Connell, Michael Ward, and many others. Upon its release, the film scored a rating of 6.8/10 at IMDb and a 69% at Rotten Tomatoes.

Set during the peak of the crucial COVID era, the film explores the electoral politics in the town of Eddington, where a sheriff and a mayor find themselves at loggerheads. Its synopsis, as per IMDb, goes as follows:

"In May of 2020, a standoff between a small-town sheriff and mayor sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico."
