Tron: Ares, the third film in the Tron franchise, will soon bring artificial intelligence programs to the real world. While there's a new protagonist in this story, more like a malfunctioning program who wants to live, Ares (Jared Leto), Jeff Bridges will reprise his role as Kevin Flynn, too, the original protagonist of the franchise.

Recently, he was seen at the San Diego Comic-Con, where, according to The Hollywood Reporter, he said a few things about Leto, known for his method acting. He said,

"He’s one of those guys. Everyone has different methods and modes man. I didn’t want to offend him as a thespo, But I thought, ‘I wanted to have a certain intimacy with you. I know your name is Ares. Can I just call you Air?’ He said, ‘Yeah man! You can call me whatever you want!’ We had a great time."

Joachim Ronning is directing Tron: Ares, which arrives on October 10, 2025. Ronning will be the third director in the franchise after Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy) and Steven Lisberger (Tron).

Among Leto's best roles is most certainly Harry Goldfarb from Requiem for a Dream (2000), where he plays a drug addict. The film currently sits with a 78% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

But his best role undoubtedly came in 2013's Dallas Buyers Club, where he played Rayon, a drug addict. For that, he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. His co-star, the film's lead Matthew McConaughey, won the Academy Award for Best Actor.

Additionally, his role was that of a sinister CEO, Niander Wallace. Though blind, he uses cybernetic implants to interact with the others.

What is Tron: Ares about?

The latest film in the franchise will be different from the first two, as they were about entering a virtual world, and this one will bring that virtual world to the real world.

According to its official logline,

"Tron: Ares follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings."

We already have a couple of trailers of Tron: Ares on YouTube, and we can see a neon red theme, a new color added to the equation. It shows Jared Leto as the titular Ares, who is searching for something he himself doesn't understand.

Besides him and Jeff Bridges, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, and others are in the film.

The first film began with Jeff Bridges' Kevin Flynn, who wants to uncover the truth about Ed Dillinger (David Warner), who stole Flynn's ideas and became the executive vice president of a tech corporation, ENCOM.

In Tron: Legacy (2010), the story shifts to Kevin's son Sam (Garrett Hedlund) when his father disappears. But rest assured, Kevin is found in this virtual world we were first introduced to in the first film.
