Han Solo, portrayed by Harrison Ford, is one of the more revered heroes in the Star Wars Universe. But if Star Wars creator George Lucas had followed his first rough draft of the iconic franchise, Han Solo would have been a green-skinned alien. As per the original draft for the first Star Wars movie Episode IV: A New Hope that released in 1977, Solo was part of an alien species from the Ureallian race with ties to the Jedi masters.
This alternate version of Han Solo was later brought to life by J. W. Rinzler in his comic book series ‘The Star Wars’. About the character, he told CBR News in 2013,
“…Solo isn't really a lizard. He's a giant, green alien/monster with gills. But he's still a good guy and he's still essential to the story. And he already has a special affinity with Wookiees.”
The Star Wars by J.W. Rinzler with artwork by Mike Mayhew, first came out in 2013 from Dark Horse Comics. The eight-part comic book series follows the official adaption of George Lucas’s rough draft screenplay from 1974. Rinzler was the former Lucasfilm Creative Executive, who created several bestselling Star Wars books and comics. He passed away in July 2021 at the age of 58.
George Lucas’s original vision for Star Wars
George Lucas’s first rough draft of the Star Wars from 1974 was much different from what finally made it to the screen in 1977. J.W. Rinzler got access to the drafts while creating ‘The Star Wars’ with Mike Mayhew. The comic series revolves around the same characters from Star Wars that we know, but with a twist. In the comics we meet the alien version of Han Solo, which didn’t make it to the final script of the movie. While speaking about the conception of the comic books, Rinzler said,
“It is/was a rough draft, though I believe Francis Ford Coppola thought it was pretty good even at the time. George was experimenting and not dotting every 'i' and crossing every 't,' so I have to fill in some minor holes…"
He continued,
"...I've added a couple of fights where there was a need for them and thrown in some continuity fixes. Also, when you adapt from one form to another, you have to make allowances and adjustments. Nevertheless, I'm sticking as close as possible to George's original story - that's the whole point of doing this. It's a great story, innovative and exciting, which I'd never want to gum up.”
While the comics differ in some aspects, the story has similarities to the original movies. Rinzler explained,
“…The general story is sort of the same: The Empire versus the good guys. And there is a Space Fortress and there are Sith Knights. But there are 100 Sith Knights, though we only see a few, and there are two attacks on the Space Fortress…Darth Vader is a general. Annikin's dad is Kane Starkiller. And Leia has her own parents, who we meet, and so on…"
He added,
"It was George's first complete imaginings of the story, something I really responded to while reading it. It was out there and fun. He wasn't worried about what would necessarily work on film, which is why comics are a perfect medium for it…”
Who is Han Solo?
Han Solo was first introduced in Star Wars: A New Hope. He came from a humble background from the planet Corellia and became part of the Rebel Alliance to fight against the Galactic Empire. He was the captain of the famous space ship Millenium Falcon along with Chewbacca, a Wookie. He would also end up falling in love with Princess Leia during his adventures through the galaxy. The American Film Institute named Han Solo as the 14th greatest film hero of all time.
Harrison Ford as Han Solo appeared in Episode IV: A New Hope (1977), Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983), Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015), and Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (2019). In Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), we would see a younger Han Solo played by Alden Ehrenreich.
