Long-time collaborators Kirsten Dunst and Sofia Coppola are again joining hands for a film that the latter will direct. Details on the project are a mystery, but the Spider-Man (2002) actress says she has read the script, according to an interview she recently gave to Town & Country Magazine.
While she was in the conversation, she also expressed her interest in being a part of A Minecraft Movie, as her kids liked it. As of this writing, A Minecraft Movie remains the third highest-grossing film of the year, having collected $955 million at the global box office.
Dunst has been active since the late 80s, but it was just recently that she got her first nomination. It was in 2022 for the Jane Campion film, The Power of the Dog, where she acted alongside Benedict Cumberbatch and Jesse Plemons, who were nominated for the Oscars too.
All the projects Kirsten Dunst and Sofia Coppola have worked on together so far
The pair first collaborated in 1999 on The Virgin Suicides, a film based on Jeffrey Eugenides' debut novel. Interestingly, it was Coppola's directorial debut, too. Dunst played one of the five Lisbon girls, Lux Lisbon, in the film. The plot follows these girls raised in a Catholic family under their overprotective parents. It wasn't a commercial success, but garnered praise from the critics. As of this writing, it sits with an 80% score at Rotten Tomatoes and garnered a cult following.
Next, Kirsten Dunst and Sofia Coppola collaborated in 2006 with Marie Antoinette, a historical drama in which Dunst played the titular Marie it. It wasn't a critical success like their previous collaboration (initially), but it managed to win an Academy Award for Best Costume Design. But like The Virgin Suicides, it became a cult classic over the years, gaining more positive reviews retrospectively.
After that, Dunst joined hands with Coppola for The Bling Ring in 2013. However, she wasn't in a major role but appeared in a cameo. The film was based on a Vanity Fair article called 'The Suspects Wore Louboutins,' written by Nancy Jo Sales, and had an ensemble cast including Emma Watson, Katie Chang, Israel Broussard, and more. Alongside Kirsten Dunst, Paris Hilton, and Brett Goodkin appeared in cameos as themselves.
The latest collaboration between Kirsten Dunst and Sofia Coppola came in 2017 for The Beguiled, which won her the Best Director at the 70th Cannes Film Festival, making her the second woman to win the accolade. It was a critical and commercial success, earning $27.9 million against a $10 million budget and currently holding a 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Regarding this one, Coppola told The Guardian in July 2017:
"I thought of seeing Gone With the Wind as a kid, and then tried to make something that’s naturalistic – to be relatable even though it’s another era. Even with the costumes and hair, we tried to refer to the period but make it so you could connect."
