Colin Farrell chimes in on his return as the Penguin in The Batman Part II. He was speaking with The Wrap about the Emmy nomination sweep for the HBO Max series, named after his malicious character. The show has earned 24 limited-series nominations, the second-highest nominations at the Emmys' 77th edition.
Farell received a lead acting performance nod for his role as Oz Cobb, the disfigured mob boss villain from the streets of Gotham. He reprised this role after Matt Reeves' 2022 neo-noir, The Batman, and is poised to return in Reeves' follow-up project. That's why the Penguin fans were curious how much of him they would get to see in the new DC sequel.
Farrell shed light on this topic while speaking about Reeves' script. Here's what the actor said,
"I’ll be getting into the script, I think, this week, and I’ll be there for however long. I don’t have many scenes, I don’t believe, but I’ll be there for whatever."
Farrell further added,
"Matt Reeves is so brilliant. I don’t know what the story is yet. I just know that obviously Matt has slaved for a few years now to really make something special. And he holds a very high bar for himself. He’s so meticulous; he cares so deeply about what he does."
What do we know about the Penguin in The Batman Part II?

Colin Farrell's recent comments suggest that the Penguin will not have a substantial role in The Batman Part II. The actor says that he doesn't "have many scenes," which means his fans will hear less of Oz's growly voice in the film. Still, that doesn't mean that he won't make any dent in the overarching story of Gotham's criminal rot.
Last year, in September 2024, writer-director Matt Reeves shared details on how Farrell's character would play a part in the continuing arc of Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight.
According to Variety, Reeves told SFX magazine,
“Colin [Farrell] will be part of the movie. We’ve shared [the script] as we’ve been going along with DC and the studio, and they’re super excited.”
At the time, Reeves also mentioned that the film won't lose its grounded approach, even if it will take some fantastical narrative routes and introduce new comic-book villains. He said,
"[The Batman Part II] is going to dig into the epic story about deeper corruption, and it goes into places that he couldn’tanticipate in the first one. The seeds of where this goes are all in the first movie. It expands in a way that will show you aspects of the character you never got to see.”
Farrell's character is central to the corruption Reeves is talking about in the city, which means the Penguin would be crucial to the journey even if he doesn't appear on screen as often as fans would have liked him to.

Despite those concerns about The Batman Part II, Farrell and his Emmy-nominated co-star, Christin Milioti, are excited to reprise their roles in the upcoming DC projects. In line with this, Milioti told The Wrap,
"I would really love to revisit [Sofia Falcone]. I want to play her again."
Milioti's character, Sofia Falcone, is revealed to be a half-sister to Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), who was introduced in Reeves' 2022 film. More details on their characters' return to Gotham are expected soon.
