After hitting a rough patch with their theatrical releases, Disney has seemingly returned to form with Lilo & Stitch. The live-action remake is riding high on the waves of success. It is already the top performer at the Friday box office (including the previews), surpassing Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. According to The Numbers, the latest Disney film has earned $55 million domestically and an almost identical figure in the international markets, taking its cumulative worldwide gross to a whopping $111 million.

The Final Reckoning is in the second spot, earning an impressive $24.8 million figure in the domestic market, where it was released on the 23rd of May. Lilo & Stitch, which released alongside the Tom Cruise actioner, is also ahead in terms of its CinemaScore grade. Disney's live-action remake has received an A grade while the Mission Impossible entry has earned an A-one. This means that the audiences are clearly in love with Dean Fleischer Camp's adorable family entertainer on its opening weekend.

That is also evident from its 93% PopcornMeter score based on 2.5k+ verified ratings alongside a 69% fresh Rotten Tomatoes score. So, the audiences are surely pleased with Disney's latest venture, and it is working out handsomely for the studio, considering its box office projections over the Memorial Day long weekend.

Lilo & Stitch is also expected to break a record of Top Gun: Maverick

Disney has rarely had trouble with the CinemaScore grades for their live-action remakes. The only exception would be Marc Webb's Snow White, which earned a B+ CinemaScore and severely underperformed at the box office. However, other Disney rehash projects have earned a near-consistent A rating, much like Lilo & Stitch.

The A-graded Disney remakes include:

  • Cinderella (2015)
  • The Jungle Book (2016)
  • Beauty and the Beast (2017)
  • Christopher Robin (2018)
  • Aladdin (2019)
  • The Lion King (2019)
  • Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019)
  • Cruella (2021)
  • The Little Mermaid (2023)

Dumbo, Mufasa: The Lion King and Alice in Wonderland are not too far behind with A- ratings. So, it indicates that North American audiences have consistently shown love to Disney's live-action remakes on CinemaScore. That is seemingly translating in its box office figures, with early projections from Variety indicating that it will surpass Top Gun: Maverick's Memorial Day long weekend opening record, reportedly of $160 million.

Lilo & Stitch's live-action box office projections hint that it will surpass the lifetime collection of the animated film, $273 million, within a week or so. That's an impressive job for a film made with a production budget of about $100 million, high for other projects but reportedly not too high for a Disney tentpole.
