It doesn’t look like the Horrible Bosses franchise is over. A third film is slowly coming together behind the scenes, more than a decade after the last instalment.
And now that both of the principal cast members appear to be in, fans are looking forward to find whether or not Hollywood will accommodate demands for more workplace chaos and quip-ready humour.
At a recent screening of his new film Honey Don’t!, Charlie Day hinted that discussions are already in the works. The fact that he is saying this, along with other notes from Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman in years past, is the first glimmer of hope in a long time that we may one day see Horrible Bosses head back to the big screen; hopefully with all the same wild abandon of the first two.
What did Charlie Day tease about Horrible Bosses 3?
The film centred on three friends who conspired to kill their antagonistic bosses with comedic results. With its razor-sharp comedic chemistry and an outrageous premise, it posted nearly $210 million in global ticket sales on a relatively modest budget.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Charlie Day made his feelings crystal clear when asked about a third Horrible Bosses film, saying:
"Absolutely would be up for another."
He added:
"Had some conversations about it with some people involved in front and behind the camera."
Day went on to cite the recent Naked Gun revival as proof that theatrical comedies can still deliver big laughs:
"I just saw The Naked Gun, and it was so fun to be in a theater with a comedy with a capital ‘c.’ I’d love to do a third one. Hopefully, we get to do it."
What Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman said about Horrible Bosses 3?
Jennifer Aniston has also voiced her enthusiasm for a third part of the film. In an interview with People Magazine, she revealed:
"Jason Bateman and I were talking about that, and Charlie Day has been talking about it a lot too."
She added:
"The characters are hilarious, and we need comedy. I personally think comedy is a necessity. That’s one that we would have a really fun time, I think, going back to, seeing where those crazy cats are today."
Aniston also talked about her character in Vanity Fair's "Rewatch" series. She said:
"I wanted [my character] to look different. The argument from the studio, and I am sorry to call you out, was that, ‘We’re just afraid it won’t look like you.’ And I said, ‘That’s kind of the point!’ I still think it might look a little bit like me. But I’m glad I fought for it and stuck to my guns."
As for Jason Bateman, though he hasn’t spoken recently, his comments from 2015 offer a perspective on the franchise’s trajectory. On Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, he reflected on the sequel’s underperformance, saying:
"Garbage, as far as box office goes. People just weren’t interested in seeing another one."
What Horrible Bosses brought to audiences and what a third part could revive?
The 2011 original exploded on the screen with a mix of ultrablack comedy and ensemble cast, with Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston leading the charge. Its 2014 follow-up reunited most of the original cast and brought in big stars like Chris Pine and Christoph Waltz.
Though the sequel remained profitable, it did not have quite the same impact; it earned over $107 million at the global box office and was criticised for feeling stagnant and unnecessary.
Now, over a decade later, the core cast’s renewed interest in the franchise provides something of a beacon for a third entry, if nothing else, to bring the franchise back to life with new gusto, sharper gags, and reclaimed cast chemistry that made it a cultish comedy comfort film to begin with.
And with Day actively involved, Aniston fervently on board, and a hint of studio interest, a Horrible Bosses 3 may be in fact a reality. And if it comes to be, audiences could once again dive headfirst into a madcap, morally absurd universe populated by outsize bosses and underdog revenge, just with more laughs, for more heart, and, god willing, better timing.
