Avengers: Doomsday is the upcoming superhero film and a part of Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It's a sequel to 2019's Endgame and the 39th entry in the MCU. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the film is slated to release on December 18, 2026. Here's the official synopsis, as per Letterboxd:

"The Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, and X-Men all fight against Doctor Doom."

The film stars James Marsden as Scott Summers, aka Cyclops. Let's explore how the film might finally do justice to this character. Marsden has played this role in the X-Men franchise.

Cyclops might get justice in Avengers: Doomsday

James Marsden is portraying Scott Summers, aka Cyclops, in Avengers: Doomsday. He is a mutant and the leader of the X-Men group. Cyclops can throw strong laser beams through his eyes. He has to wear a special visor to ensure that the beams aren't randomly distributed. Over the years, the character has been at the receiving end of several jokes.

Recently, the makers of Avengers: Doomsday dropped the trailer, and it provided the first look at Cyclops. It feels like the film will finally do justice to this character. Alex Paknadel is the writer for the upcoming solo Cyclops series. He spoke about this mutant's reputation.

"I feel like people who think he’s a square aren’t looking closely enough. He presents as a square because he betrays so little, but he had a deep relationship with one of the most s*xually liberated X-Men characters ever, and of course during the Cyclops-was-right era (which I love), we see just how ruthless he can be."

He added,

"To be honest, I think it’s a reflection of the maturity of the audience. There are many, many adult X-Men fans now, so it’s easier to relate to the person who has to juggle 80,000 responsibilities without falling apart. That’s just life in the 21st century. I also think the fact that he’s this barely contained pressure cooker is intensely relatable."

He further spoke about how Wolverine is relatable to teenagers, while Scott's importance is in keeping the plates spinning.

"Wolverine is very easy to relate to when you’re a teenager because – and I say this with love, he gets to cut loose and sulk in the woods from time to time. Scott has to keep the plates spinning."

Alex's comment gives viewers confidence that the character might get enough footage and material in the upcoming film. Marsden has played the role in several X-Men movies, including The Last Stand and Days of Future Past. The character is powerful yet humble, and an entire generation of moviegoers will see his abilities in the upcoming film.

Avengers: Doomsday is about several superhero teams, including the mutants, coming together to stop Doctor Doom. Its cast members include Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Vanessa Kirby, and Florence Pugh, among others.

The film is set to release on December 18, 2026.
