Stephanie surprised a distracted Kayla in her office. Kayla did her best to act normal, knowing that Steve and Shawn were supposed to be breaking into the lab at that moment. Stephanie wanted some company, but Kayla wasn't free for dinner. "Maybe I'll try Dad," she said. "No, you can't do that," Kayla quickly replied.

Stephanie guessed that Steve might be on a case. Kayla made it clear she didn't want to talk about it. Stephanie finally admitted that she had an ulterior motive for her dinner invite. She wanted to talk to Kayla about choosing Xander and Titan as the hospital buyers. Kayla gave Stephanie some advice about Xander. "He needs to convince the board that he is not as devious and heartless as EJ DiMera," she said.

Xander couldn't seem to reach Dr. Frame, the director of DiMera Pharmaceuticals. Xander was ready to fire the man, but was grateful when Alex told him that he had asked Stephanie to go to bat for Xander with Kayla. Alex was thankful that Xander had given him a second chance, but was also thinking about Philip. "Don't you think your brother might deserve one, too?" Alex asked.

Alex admitted he was not Philip's biggest fan, but he wanted to honor his uncle. "I do know Victor would have wanted the whole family working together. And you got leverage over Philip. Maybe you can get him to agree to a demotion," Alex suggested. Xander didn't think he could ever trust Philip again. He also wasn't sure he could trust himself.

"If Philip goes behind my back again, there will be hell to pay. I don't know what I'd do, quite honestly, but I don't want to be put in a position to find out," Xander admitted.

Just as Alex left, Paulina appeared with a box from Sweet Bits and a smile. As she tried to sweet-talk Xander, he cut her off. "Cut the crap, Paulina. You're here to talk me out of suing your daughter for all that she's worth," he said. "Is it working?" Paulina asked.

"Come on, Xander. It was an honest mistake. All those scones look alike," Paulina said, excusing Chanel's carelessness. Xander addressed the elephant in the room. "This isn't the first accident to happen at Sweet Bits. Maybe it's best for the whole town if that place is shut down," he said.

Paulina asked what she could do for Xander so he'd forget the whole thing. Xander asked Paulina to help him sway the hospital board so he could buy Salem University Hospital. Since Abe was on the board, Xander thought he had an in. Paulina wondered if Xander would be willing to give Theo a job if he returned to Salem. In the end, Xander and Paulina had a deal.

In his Salem Inn room, Philip directed Kevin to break into Dr. Russell's lab. Kevin was nervous, but Philip was determined. "High risk, high reward, right?" Kevin stayed on the phone with Philip as he broke in. Kevin found that the drug was already measured out, so he had to take a bit from each tube to make a new dose, so nobody knew he had taken one. Philip was alarmed when Kevin hung up.

Steve and Shawn waited outside the lab behind a dumpster and discussed their plan. "We gotta get our hands on that drug. We can't let him die. I cannot lose my dad again," Shawn lamented. Steve was already working on doctoring the lab's security feed.

Steve told Shawn that they only had 10 minutes to get the job done. "No one said saving the day was ever easy. Just ask your old man," Steve said.

As Steve and Shawn tried to override the security code on the lab door, Kevin heard them and quickly hid. When Steve and Shawn got in, they noticed that the Versavix was gone. Steve realized someone had just escaped through the emergency exit. They returned to Kayla to give her the bad news.

Alex and Stephanie later met up at Small Bar, where Alex impressed his girlfriend with an expensive bottle of wine. Alex admitted that Gabi didn't think she got her money's worth after their dinner at The Bistro. Stephanie also told Alex the advice that Kayla had for Alex when he made his pitch to the hospital board.

Alex thanked her for the advice before changing the subject to Stephanie's book. He still wanted Titan to publish it and even found the perfect editor. "Steph, I just want to be the guy who encourages you. I don't want to be the one to hold you back," Alex said as he tried to convince Stephanie to allow her book to be published.

In Horton Square, Xander ran into Philip, who was still worried about Kevin's break-in but tried not to show it. He even ignored a call from Kevin to make his case to Xander. "We make great partners, but more importantly, I actually liked spending time with you. Somewhere along the way, I stopped seeing you as a rival and started seeing you as a brother," Philip admitted.

Xander confessed the same, but he couldn't forgive and forget Philip's betrayal. "Stay the hell away from me. That's the only way this works," Xander said of him and Philip working together.

When Philip returned to his Salem Inn room, Kevin called to tell him he ended up taking the whole batch of Versavix rather than just one dose. Philip ordered Kevin to return the doses, but Dr. Russell then texted to say he was on his way back to the lab.

Marlena was impressed to learn that Tate cooked a gourmet meal for Sophia to help celebrate her 18th birthday. He also had Marlena's living room all decked out in pink decor.

"You are a very kind man. I know you want to do right by Sophia, but I think we should talk," Marlena told a confused Tate. Marlena was concerned about the fact that Sophia had real feelings for Tate. He claimed those feelings were gone and they were just friends now, but Marlena wasn't so sure. "I would caution you on these acts of kindness cause they could be a little misleading. Unless, of course, you have these feelings for her," Marlena advised.

Tate still insisted that he and Sophia were just friends, as he still had feelings for Holly. Marlena tried to be encouraging about Holly, but Tate didn't think there was a future for them anymore because so much had changed. Marlena agreed and added that Tate had also changed and matured due to Sophia's pregnancy.

Tate noted that things had been hard since Johnny backed out of the adoption, so Marlena confessed that she helped convince Johnny to do that. Johnny had told her that he wasn't sure he was ready to be a father. "I told him he needed to be honest about it because you can't suppress those sorts of feelings. If you try, they will surface and then everybody gets hurt," Marlena explained. Tate understood and said Marlena gave Johnny the right advice.

Tate pointed out that Sophia was now 18, so her mother no longer had a say in who would adopt the baby. Just then, Sophia arrived. She was thrilled and surprised by all the birthday decor. Marlena left, so Tate served dinner. Sophia was so impressed that she asked Tate to cook the meal for her regularly.

That alarmed Tate a bit, but he didn't let on. Instead, he gave Sophia her gift — a corsage so they could pretend they were at the prom for just a minute. Tate then asked how Amy reacted when Sophia told her they were going to visit an adoption agency. Sophia said she hadn't told her family yet.

After Tate got Sophia's birthday cake, he told her he wasn't feeling very well. Sophia felt Tate's forehead and noticed he was burning up. Tate found he had a fever of 102.4 and told Sophia to stay away from him in case she got sick.

When Marlena returned home, she told Sophia she would check on Tate, who was lying down. Once alone, Marlena got a call from Shane telling her that Andrew and Paul were getting closer than ever to finding John.
